Experience the next generation of Xiaomi smartwatches

Many describe Zepp as the next generation of Xiaomi smartwatches that we all should be excited about. These watches succeed to impress even the most quality-conscious smartwatch enthusiasts with their unquestionable sense of style and performance. The Zepp brand was only released towards the end of 2020 and as a newcomer on the market, it is yet to be discovered by many. Even though the name Zepp is still not known by the majority, we are confident about this being the upcoming brand we’ll all sooner or later be considering when shopping for a smartwatch. Zepp is the next project of Amazfit creator Xiaomi in its quest to meet the demanding needs of smartwatch consumers.

The stylish design is without a doubt one of the biggest pros of these Zepp smartwatches. Design-wise these watches can easily be compared to the more expensive premium smartwatches on the market. The Zepp collection includes three models at the moment; two stylish Zepp E models and Zepp Z, the newcomer. But how do these watches differ from each other?

Zepp E — an elegant smartwatch with a battery that lasts

ZEPP E

If you’re looking for a stylish smartwatch that actually feels comfortable to wear day in and day out, we have good news for you. Zepp E is exactly what you have been looking for. In addition to a beautiful variety of colour alternatives the collection also offers two different case shapes for you to choose from: the circular Zepp E Circle and the rectangular Zepp E Square. It is quite obvious which iconic smartwatch Zepp E Square draws its inspiration from. But on the other hand, when the end result looks this good, can you really fault them for doing it?

Zepp E - Technical specs

  • Case diameter: 36 mm (square) and 42 mm (circle)
  • Screen: AMOLED
  • Water resistance: 5 ATM
  • Battery life: Up to 7 days in demanding use
  • Sport modes: 11 different sport modes
  • Sensors: heart rate measurement from the wrist (optical), an acceleration sensor and a geomagnetic sensor
  • Compatibility: iOS 10.0 and Android 5.0 (or newer operating systems)

Zepp E dazzles with its design

Xiaomi might well have nabbed itself the top spot on the list of the most stylish smartwatches out there. The beautiful stainless steel case of the Zepp E combined with its infinity-like curved AMOLED screen give this watch a look that’s hard not to like. This watch is the perfect pick for a day at the office, but thanks to its classy looks we could easily see the Zepp E being paired up with a suit.

The curated range of colours offers just enough options to choose from. In addition to colour and model options, Zepp is also offering you a selection of strap alternatives. You can choose between a trendy stainless steel mesh bracelet, a classic leather strap or a sporty silicone strap. If you’re feeling torn and just can’t decide which one to get, you’ll be glad to hear that the watch’s 20mm wide strap is easy to swap anytime you wish.

But in addition to aesthetics, Zepp also provides us comfort! The Zepp E watch is only 9 mm thick and weighs just 36 grams. Comfort is always an important feature regardless of the watch in question. Zepp E feels good on your wrist even after a long day.

Questions always arise when a new brand introduces its watches to the demanding market. Most notably, can you trust their performance? At least, in this case, the doubts are unnecessary. These smartwatches definitely perform well in comparison to their competition. Zepp should also be applauded for the long-lasting battery life that their watches offer. Something that most of us will definitely appreciate. Zepp E can last up to a week even in demanding use. Its colourful AMOLED screen offers plenty of brightness while the sensors work just as one would expect.

A considerable amount of basic features

The Zepp E is primarily a smartwatch, but it also features 11 pre-installed sports modes, which allow you to easily track your workout progress. The watch combines the user’s heart rate, general activity and oxygen saturation into a PAI score, which is an index for the physical well-being of the user. The watch also features a sleep monitor and tools to combat stress. The watch can withstand water and is also suitable for swimming, especially when paired with the silicone strap.

When paired with a smartphone you can use Zepp E to view phone notifications as well as to control the music you’re listening to. Thanks to its long-lasting battery life you actually have the possibility to get the most out of its features without the need for constant charging breaks.

Zepp Z — A smart-casual charmer with built-in GPS

Zepp Z

Released a few months after the Zepp E, the Zepp Z is the second watch in the collection. This model is equipped with built-in GPS, a sought after feature which its sibling model lacks.

Compared to its predecessor, Zepp Z offers a more traditional design, and definitely looks more like a regular wristwatch with its solid bezel and crown. For a large part it offers the same features as Zepp E, but there is a significant jump up when comparing the price. Do the upgrades in the Zepp Z justify its higher price point?

Zepp Z - Technical specs

  • Case diameter: 46 mm
  • Screen: AMOLED
  • Water resistance: 5 ATM
  • Battery life: Up to 15 days in demanding use
  • Built-in GPS & GLONASS
  • Sport modes: 12 different sport modes
  • Sensors: heart rate measurement from the wrist (optical), an acceleration sensor, a geomagnetic sensor, a gyroscope, a blue light sensor and an air pressure sensor
  • Compatibility: iOS 10.0 and Android 5.0 (or newer operating systems)

A robust design and a bright screen

While we enjoyed Zepp E’s frameless and modern design, there’s lots to like about Zepp Z too. By opting for a more traditional look for Zepp Z, Xiaomi wisely positions itself to cater to all tastes, whether it be modern or classic. Compared to the Zepp E watches, the Zepp Z is slightly bigger and sits sturdily on the wrist. Regardless of its size, it doesn’t feel intrudingly big at any point. The watch weighs only 40 grams and its case is 45 mm in diameter and 10,75 mm thick. Its stylish 22 mm wide brown leather strap complements the watch perfectly. Besides being handsome, this watch is also practical. Zepp Z is water-resistant to 50-metres, which allows the watch to be worn even while swimming. Although if you go for a swim, we advise that you don't use the leather strap while doing it.

The buttons found on the watch’s side and its round bezel give Zepp Z the feel of a traditional wristwatch. The physical buttons make going through the watch’s features easy and intuitive. The bright 1,39-inch AMOLED screen takes the user experience to a whole new level. The colours are vibrant and bright, and the screen is easy to read even in strong daylight.

Control the watch with voice commands

The Zepp Z works fluidly with both iOS and Android operating systems, providing an impressive set of functions that you can access through the Zepp app. Having connected your phone to the watch, you can for example view your phone notifications from your watch display. Through the app, you can also decide which notifications you want to receive to your Zepp Z.

The Zepp Z also works by voice commands, which you can use even when the watch is in offline mode. Thanks to the voice command you can for example control the watch’s basic features and the music with your voice. Perfect for when driving the car!

Regarding its sporting features, the Zepp Z is mostly the same as the Zepp E. Zepp Z’s built-in GPS and GLONASS are great additions to an already solid set of features. The watch has 12 sport modes, for example, swimming, running and alpine skiing. It also has a feature for tracking your sleep.

Both the Zepp E and the Zepp Z have their definite pros. Design-wise they are both equally beautiful and the long-lasting battery life does not leave us cold either. The Zepp E is a bit cheaper and offers more variety in terms of colour and material to choose from. On the other hand, the Zepp Z has a few more features to justify its higher price.
